Before the move

  • Looking for a rental on Domain or Real Estate
    • Shortlist rentals
    • Register for inspections
    • Attend inspections and submit form. If you're interstate, you can ask a friend to attend it for you or hire someone on Airtasker.
  • Decide if you're bringing your car
    • Book a car moving service
  • Buying furniture and appliances if you don't own any to arrive on the day or week of the move. Prioritise necessary purchases. Use websites that allow you to choose a delivery date and/or time e.g. Appliances Online, Koala
    • Fridge
    • Washing machine and dryer
    • Mattress
  • Book the lift if moving into an apartment and bringing furniture and/or appliances

On the day

  • Meet the agent at their office to go through paperwork and pick up the keys
  • Make a trip to the supermarket to fill up your fridge and pantry or decide to eat out until you feel like it

Shortly after

  • Make sure the lift is booked if you are expecting large furniture and/or appliances
    • TV
    • Sofa
    • Furniture deliveries from IKEA e.g. bed frame, TV unit, shelves, dining table, chairs
  • Make a trip or multiple to IKEA and Bunnings to purchase knick-knacks and/or plants

Transferring your interstate driver's licence

You'll need to bring:

  1. Attend a service centre with the required documentation and complete an application form there
    1. One of the documents presented must contain your signature
      Category A: Establishment of identity (1 document)
      • Birth certificate
      Category B: Link between identity and person (1 document)
      • Driver's licence not expired by more than two years
      • Australian passport not expired by more than two years
      Category C: Evidence of identity in community (2 documents)
      • Debit or credit card
      • Australian bank statement or letter, less than six months old
      • Australian utilities account or notice, such as a gas, water, electricity or telephone bill, less than six months old
      • Australian Tax Office:
        • Tax File Number Letter (original); or
        • Tax Notice of Assessment Letter (original)
      • Official document or letter from a government agency showing residential address, less than six months old
      • Residential tenancy agreement that is current and shows residential address
      • Electoral enrolment letter showing residential address, less than two years old
      • Medicare card
      Category D: Evidence of residential address (1 document)
      Note: A document listed in category B or C containing your current residential address is an acceptable document for category D, as long as that document has not already been used to satisfy category B or C.
      • Letter from current employer showing residential address, less than six months old
  1. Get a new photo taken at the service centre
Transferring your interstate car registration
WA
You'll need to bring:
A valid Certificate of Inspection
Completed Application to License a Vehicle (Form VL17)
Completed Proof of Identity Nominated Owner/Vehicle Licence Holder (Form VL186)
Primary and secondary identification (one of which must show your WA residential address)
Proof of vehicle ownership
Vehicle license plates
 
  1. Book vehicle inspection and receive a Certificate of Inspection valid for three months
  1. Print and fill out Application to license a vehicle form (VL17)
    1. If the vehicle you have purchased is not currently licensed in WA, you will need to provide proof of vehicle ownership.
      Please bring along the original copy of one of the following documents if the vehicle has not been previously licensed in your name:
      A receipt or bill of sale showing purchase price, date of sale, vehicle details (including VIN, plate number or engine number), seller's and purchaser's name and seller's signature. Receipts and tax invoices must show 'paid in full' in order to be accepted as proof of vehicle ownership.
      A contract of sale/purchase with receipt attached to show the purchase has been finalised. The purchase price, date of sale, vehicle details (including VIN, plate number or engine number), seller's and purchaser's name and seller's signature must be shown on the contract and/or receipt. Receipts and tax invoices must show 'paid in full' in order to be accepted as proof of vehicle ownership.
  1. Print and fill out Proof of Identity Nominated Owner/Vehicle Licence Holder form (VL186) to provide proof of identity
    1. You will be required to provide one primary and one secondary identification document, one of which must show your WA residential address.
      • Primary identification (one of the following)
        • Driver's licence not expired by more than two years
        • Australian passport not expired by more than two years
        • Birth certificate (original copy)
      • Secondary identification (one of the following)
        • Medicare card
        • Debit or credit card
        • Bank statement not more than 12 months old
        • Phone, gas or electricity bill not more than six months old
        • Evidence of electoral enrolment not more than two years old
        • Current residential tenancy agreement
        • Original ATO Tax Notice of Assessment Letter
  1. Provide proof of vehicle ownership by bringing:
      • Evidence the vehicle is currently licensed in your name (i.e. registration papers)
  1. Remove vehicle licence plates when you arrive at the centre
  1. Install new vehicle licence plates

Moving out

  • Email your agent 28 days before your move date
  • Organise when and how you'll hand back the keys
  • Ask your agent for their cleaner to maximise the chances of getting your bond back as they will clean it to the agent's standards — You can also find your own if you prefer but there may be issues if they have to go back to reclean it
  • Cleaning before the bond clean
    • Cleaning marks on the wall
    • Patching up holes in the wall
  • Book the lift in advance
  • Organise movers
  • Start eating everything in your fridge and buy fewer groceries
  • Give away or sell your plants, opened bottles of alcohol, perishable goods and other stuff that can't be moved or brought over
